About Our Institute
The Clean Energy Research Institute (TEMEN) is a research institute established in Ankara under the Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mineral Research Agency (TENMAK) by Presidential Decree No. 57, published in the Official Gazette No. 31082 dated 28 March 2020, to conduct and support work in the field of clean energy technologies.
TENMAK TEMEN was established to enhance Türkiye’s competitiveness in clean energy, meet innovation needs, enable the production and development of new products, and create a scientific environment consistent with national policies and strategies so that innovative clean energy technologies can be used widely and effectively.
Within this scope, it is responsible for carrying out, commissioning, monitoring and coordinating scientific research in co-operation with public institutions and organisations, universities and the private sector that use clean energy technologies and/or conduct research in this field, and for contributing to such research,
TENMAK TEMEN’s mission is tocreate a sustainable clean-energy future by decarbonising the economies of our state, our nation and the world, to raise awareness in this area, and to integrate clean-energy objectives with national energy policy. It also aims to provide guidance and develop creative solutions by carrying out the R&D projects required by the energy sector.
TENMAK TEMEN carries out research, development, innovation, design, production, testing and localisation activities that enable clean energy technologies to contribute to Türkiye’s scientific, technical and economic development.
Our Institute’s Mission
To support Türkiye’s scientific, technical and economic development in clean energy technologies and to conduct research, development, testing, production, localisation, consultancy and training activities aimed at developing sustainable, innovative and low-carbon energy solutions.
Our Institute’s Mission
To make contribution so that Türkiye is enabled to become internationally competitive, innovative and pioneering country in clean energy technologies, and to promote the development and wider use of sustainable energy solutions that take account of environmental and human well-being.
Hydrogen Technologies
TENMAK TEMEN Hydrogen Technologies Laboratory (HTL) is equipped to provide infrastructure for researchers wishing to work in the fields of hydrogen and fuel cells in Türkiye. Fuel-cell tests, analytical measurements, system integration and modelling studies can be carried out in the laboratory, in which services can be rendered openly to universities, companies and research organisations.
Research Areas
Fuel Cell Component Development
R&D activities are carried out to develop components used in fuel-cell systems, such as membranes, catalysts and bipolar plate materials.
Fuel Cell Performance Testing
Lifetime and performance tests are carried out on developed single cells and fuel-cell stacks.
Characterisation
Characterisation studies are conducted to support the development of hydrogen production and storage materials and fuel-cell components.
Hydrogen Production
R&D activities are being carried out on different hydrogen production processes.
Hydrogen Storage
R&D activities are carried out to develop physical and chemical hydrogen-storage materials and methods.
Industrial Hydrogen Applications
Studies are conducted on various industrial processes in which hydrogen is used.
Modelling
Computational fluid dynamics and advanced modelling studies are conducted for hydrogen technologies.
System Integration
Studies are carried out on the use of clean energy technologies, such as green hydrogen production and hydrogen power systems, in different fields.
TENMAK Eco Caravan
The Institute operates the self-sufficient TENMAK Eco Caravan, powered by hydrogen and clean energy sources, for use at various social events. Without requiring any external power source, the Eco Caravan meets the energy needs of equipment in a living space—including air conditioning, a refrigerator, water heater, cooker, LED television and home cinema system— by using renewable energy and hydrogen technologies.
TENMAK Eco Caravan is equipped with a wind turbine, photovoltaic cell array, hydrogen technologies and modern energy systems.
It is designed to reach remote areas and to provide support during disasters and emergencies.
It can provide the energy required to operate all equipment in the living area without any external power supply source.
Power is supplied by 1,710 W monocrystalline photovoltaic panels and a 1,000 W wind turbine rated at 12.5 m/s and a height of 6.5 m. A 1,000 W PEM-type fuel cell is used as an auxiliary power unit.
The energy storage system consists of 6 units of 230 Ah gel batteries and a 5,000-litre metal-hydride hydrogen tank.
Testing and Analysis Services
In addition to project work in Hydrogen Technologies Laboratory, it renders services to meet testing and analysis requests coming from universities, research institutions and the private sector in the fields of hydrogen and fuel cells.
Fuel Cell Tests
Single-cell tests are carried out on two 125 W test systems.
Single-cell and stack polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) tests are carried out on two pcs. of 1 kW test systems.
PEMFC stack tests are carried out at test stations with capacities of 2 kW and 12 kW.
Analytical Measurements
TEMEN Hydrogen Technologies Laboratory has analytical measurement instruments used in the development of new materials for fuel cells and other hydrogen systems.
Gas Chromatography (GC)
Thermogravimetric and Calorimetric Analysis (TGA-DSC)
Optical Contact Angle and Surface Tension Measurement
High-Pressure Gas Adsorption Analysis (HPVA)
Surface Area and Porosity Analysis
The available instruments are used to measure the wettability and water-adsorption characteristics, adsorption and desorption behaviour, surface area and porosity of fuel-cell materials.
